FOF101 - Intro to F1 2017

FOF101 - Intro to F1 2017

Disciplines:  Technology/MediaArts/Sports
Course Code:  FO17-101
Pre-requisites:  None
Instructor:  Us

This course enables students to explore and have a preview of the differences of the 2017 Formula as opposed to the 2016 version, as well as explore some of the predicted benefits and consequences of going in this direction.  We will look at dimensions, the overall design philosophy, and the engine regulations opening up.

The media arts segment of this course emphasizes the stated goals of our new overlords, Liberty Media, and how they plan to get us there through Americanized showmanship and business practices in some areas, as well as democratizing the sport in others.

Finally, the sports aspect of this course will allow students to understand some of the new on-track rules being introduced this year, especially as they concern safety cars, safety car deployment, standing vs rolling starts after safety cars, as well as the rules about driving backwards on the track.  As well, we discuss the possible motivations behind Ferrari filing complaints against pre-loaded clutch technology and hydraulically actuated front suspensions.

If you're a superfan and you know all of this stuff, you can skip the first hour or so and we get into the regular weekly news and views and odd business from the paddock.
